সাবটমিক মানে “পরমাণুর চেয়ে ছোট।” পরমাণু প্রোটন, নিউট্রন এবং ইলেকট্রন দ্বারা গঠিত। প্রোটন এবং নিউট্রনগুলি কোয়ার্ক নামে আরও ছোট কণা দিয়ে তৈরি। বর্তমানে উপলব্ধ প্রমাণের উপর ভিত্তি করে, পদার্থবিদরা মনে করেন যে কোয়ার্ক হল প্রাথমিক কণা।
যেমন: ইলেকট্রন, ফোটন এবং মিউওন হলো একক মৌলিক কণিকা যাদেরকে অতিপারমাণবিক কণিকারূপে গণ্য করা হয়। পক্ষান্তরে প্রোটন, নিউট্রন এবং মেসন হলো একাধিক কোয়ার্কের সমন্বয়ে গঠিত অতিপারমাণবিক কণিকা যেখানে এই কোয়ার্কও এক প্রকার মৌলিক কণিকা। অর্থাৎ অতিপারমাণবিক কণিকা হলো এমন ধরনের মৌলিক বা যৌগিক কণিকা যা পরমাণুর চেয়ে ক্ষুদ্র।
